Ability to sort by first unit (Letter, number or symbol) in record, then by second, etc

If I have these records starting with these numbers let's say (Not in order here):
12
1
234
26
42
The sort would be:
1
12
26
42
234
I would like to have the ability to sort by first unit, then by second, etc
The sort would then be:
1
12
234
26
42
