AI Step Formatted Output (Markdown)

The AI Step is awesome and we want to use it way more in automations.
However, the output format is just plain text.
We'd love to have the output in Markdown and visualize properly in the SmartSuite "SmartDoc" field so it's actually formatted and readable and not a bulk of text that no one understands.

Problem
Outputs generated by AI Fields (AI Field Agent, AI Assist) are rendered as plain text only. Any formatting the model produces – markdown, LaTeX, line breaks, lists, headings, bold/italic – is either stripped or displayed as raw syntax. AI Fields are usable, but readability is significantly reduced, especially for longer outputs. For end users this is a major limitation.
The same issue occurs when data is written into
SmartDoc
fields via automations (native SmartSuite automations, Make) – formatting is not preserved.Use cases affected
- Project situation reports and status summaries
- Meeting summaries and action-item extraction
- Risk analyses and structured assessments where headings and bullets are essential
- SmartDoc fields populated via automation – markdown from upstream systems is lost
Requested functionality
- AI Field output rendered with full rich text / markdown support (headings, lists, bold, italic, links, tables, code blocks)
- LaTeX rendering for technical and engineering content
- Preservation of formatting when AI output is written into SmartDoc, or when SmartDoc is populated via automation
- Ideally a per-field toggle – Plain text vs Rich text – so existing setups are not affected
Business impact
AI Fields are central to our rollout across portfolio management, project controls and GRC use cases. Proper formatting support would significantly improve readability for end users and reduce manual cleanup outside SmartSuite.

Not sure if I'm doing wrong but regardless of my prompts and even with providing guide documents for formatting, the results of the AI Field Agent never populate in a human friendly readable format. Is this a feature request or perhaps my user error?
