Application Self-Linked Record should Retain Integrity

When an application has a Linked Record field that is linked back to the same application it resides in, the field should retain its integrity. For example, if I have a Contacts application and I created a Linked Record field for "Reports To" that links to another Contact record, I want the "other side" of that Linked Record to be visible, and that I can name "My Direct Reports".
So if I'm in Sally's Contact Record and I choose James as her "Reports To", I want to go to James' record and see Sally's name in "My Direct Reports". Right now SmartSuite combines these all into a single field, and I can't build any type of hierarchy.
