I want to automate the process of attaching files to records in SmartSuite. Currently, SmartSuite automations can't directly pull email attachments into a Files & Images field on a new record. It would be beneficial to have a feature that allows direct uploading of email attachments to records.

This has been supported in SmartSuite automations for a quite a while already (unless I misunderstood your request).
On a screenshot below I'm using "When Gmail is recieved" as a trigger. 
As a next step – I am creating a new record and pulling Attachments from the trigger rigth into that record's Files and Images field. 
You can do the same with existing records, too. 
Please let me know if this answers the question and solves the use case.
