Agreed! The "files and images" field could use some updates to improve managing files, including viewing and versioning. Also, the ability to open a .pdf file and edit it in your default pdf editor would be wonderful. Teamwork.com has built a workflow like this with a native integration using their own Document Editor, and it is very sweet.
